Main Street Texarkana is reaching out to the community to ignite a new chapter of revitalization for Downtown. On August 6, 2026, the organization officially launched its “Light Up West Broad Street” campaign, an initiative aimed at expanding decorative string lighting along the western corridor of one of the twin city’s most iconic thoroughfares.
This project is not just about illuminating sidewalks; it is a direct response to a recent, extensive community survey in which participants consistently identified better lighting, increased safety, and continued downtown beautification as top priorities. Residents and business owners expressed a desire for a more welcoming and cohesive environment that encourages exploration and vibrant evening activity.
The ambitious campaign has set a goal of raising $125,000 in dedicated community contributions. Every dollar donated will be matched, doubling the impact and effectively creating a $250,000 lighting fund. The aim is to extend the beautiful string lighting, which has already positively transformed the ambiance and character of East Broad Street, further west. This will create a unified, inviting corridor that connects businesses and encourages visitors to stay longer and enjoy all that downtown has to offer.
“Our community told us through the survey that improved lighting and safety are essential to continuing our downtown’s growth and vibrancy,” said Ina McDowell, Executive Director of Main Street Texarkana. “The ‘Light Up West Broad Street’ campaign is a direct response to that feedback. This isn’t just about lights; it’s about making our downtown feel safer, more welcoming, and more connected, supporting our local businesses well into the evening.”
Matching funds allow every community member—regardless of the size of their contribution—to see their support have an immediate, doubled impact.
