TEXARKANA, Texas — A months-long investigation into a devastating residential blast has culminated in an arson arrest, officials announced.
Following a detailed probe by the Texarkana Texas Fire Marshal’s Office, authorities have arrested Traveonta Johnson in connection with the February explosion and subsequent fire that leveled a local home. Johnson faces a felony charge of criminal mischief.
Neighbors Shaken by Powerful Blast
The incident dates back to the morning of February 2, when emergency crews were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 210 Oakhill Road.
Upon arrival, fire crews found a single-story brick residence entirely engulfed in flames. Initial observations at the scene immediately pointed to a significant explosion, which had severely compromised the structure before the fire spread.
Uncapped Gas Line Identified as Cause
According to fire marshals, the blast was entirely preventable. Investigators determined that a natural gas cook stove had been removed from the house, but the main natural gas supply line was never properly shut off.
As a result, natural gas flowed freely into the home for several hours, pooling inside the structure. The accumulated gas eventually found an ignition source, triggering a massive explosion that completely destroyed the residence.
Task Force Secures Arrest Warrant
Working in tandem with the Texarkana Texas Police Department and the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office, local fire marshals gathered physical evidence and witness statements sufficient to secure a felony warrant for Johnson.
“This arrest reflects the diligent work and strong partnership between our fire marshal’s office and police department,” said Fire Marshal Chuck Weerts. “Incidents like these can have devastating consequences, and we remain committed to thoroughly investigating these cases to protect public safety and hold those responsible accountable.”
Authorities note that while an arrest has been made, the investigation remains active.
