TEXARKANA, TX — Due to a prolonged period of dry weather and increasingly dangerous fire conditions, Bowie County officials have officially implemented a mandatory burn ban for all unincorporated areas, effective immediately.
The decision comes after local fire marshals and the Texas Forest Service reported a significant drop in fuel moisture levels across the region. With low humidity and gusty winds forecasted for the remainder of the week, the risk of a small brush fire turning into a catastrophic wildfire is at a critical high.
What is Prohibited?
Under the current order, the following activities are strictly forbidden:
- Open burning of trash, brush, or debris.
- The use of burn barrels.
- Campfires and fire pits.
- Controlled burns for land clearing.
Safety Exceptions
While outdoor burning is restricted, residents may still use outdoor grills (gas or charcoal) for food preparation, provided they are utilized in a safe manner, away from dry vegetation, and are never left unattended.
Enforcement and Penalties
Local law enforcement will be strictly enforcing the ban. Residents found in violation of the order could face a Class C Misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500. Additionally, if a fire started in violation of the ban causes property damage or injury, the responsible party may face more severe criminal charges and civil liability for damages.
How to Stay Safe
- Extinguish Cigarettes: Never toss cigarette butts out of car windows.
- Trailer Safety: Ensure trailer chains are not dragging on the pavement, as sparks can easily ignite dry grass along the highway.
- Report Fires Immediately: If you see smoke or a small fire, call 911 immediately before it has a chance to spread.
