TEXARKANA, Texas — Authorities are investigating a bizarre incident in which a Texarkana man allegedly stole a gas stove from a residence, triggering a house explosion that left the property heavily damaged and the suspect hospitalized.
According to Texarkana Texas Police Department (TTPD), officers responded to reports of an explosion on Oakhill Road late Friday evening. Witnesses told investigators they saw a man removing appliances from the home shortly before the blast.
Police say the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Traveonta Ladell Johnson, was attempting to disconnect a gas stove when a leak ignited, causing a powerful explosion that blew out windows and started a small fire. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze, and no other injuries were reported.
The suspect was found outside the home with burns and minor injuries. He was transported to St. Michael Hospital for treatment and is expected to face multiple charges, including burglary, theft, and reckless endangerment.
Investigators are working with the Texarkana Fire Department to determine the exact cause of ignition and assess structural damage to the property.
Neighbors described the explosion as “like a bomb going off,” shaking nearby homes and prompting several 911 calls.
