As severe weather season approaches, the Texas Comptroller is offering a sales tax holiday to help residents stock up on essential survival and safety gear. From 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, through midnight on Monday, April 27, you can purchase qualifying items tax-free.
What Qualifies?
There is no limit on the number of qualifying items you can buy. Items are exempt based on their sales price:
Less than $3,000:
- Portable generators
Less than $300:
- Emergency ladders
- Hurricane shutters
Less than $75:
- Batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, 6-volt, or 9-volt; single or multipacks)
- Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors
- First aid kits
- Fire extinguishers
- Fuel containers (gasoline, diesel, etc.)
- Flashlights, lanterns, and candles (portable self-powered light sources)
- Nonelectric coolers and ice chests for food storage
- Portable self-powered radios (including two-way and weather band)
- Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits
- Tarps and plastic sheeting
- Mobile telephone batteries and chargers
Important Tips for Online Shoppers
The tax-free status applies to items purchased in-store, online, or by phone. However, be aware that shipping, handling, and delivery charges are considered part of the sales price. For example, if you buy a rescue ladder for $299 but the shipping is $10, the total price is $309, making the entire purchase taxable.
What’s Not Included?
The following items remain taxable during the holiday:
- Batteries for automobiles, boats, or other motorized vehicles
- Camping stoves and supplies
- Chainsaws and plywood
- Extension ladders and stepladders
- Tents
- Cleaning supplies (bleach, wipes, etc.)
Note for the Ark-La-Tex
This specific tax holiday applies only to purchases made on the Texas side of Texarkana or from Texas-based retailers. While Arkansas held its weather preparedness holiday in February, local residents can cross the state line this weekend to take advantage of these significant savings.
